গোবিন্দচরন পার্কের নাম বদলে রাখা হয় হাসান মার্কেট।
সিলেটের বন্দরবাজারে গিরীশচন্দ্র রায় তার বাবার স্মৃতি রক্ষার্থে একটি পার্ক অর্থাৎ উদ্যান নির্মাণ করেন এবং নাম দেওয়া হয় ‘গোবিন্দচরণ পার্ক’।
১৯৫৯ সালে ঐতিহাসিক পার্কটি গুঁড়িয়ে দিয়ে তৈরি করা হয় বিপণিবিতান। তৎকালীন জেলা প্রশাসক আলী হাসানের নামানুসারে পার্কের নাম বদলে রাখা হয় হাসান মার্কেট। যা এখনো আছে।
অখণ্ড ভারতবর্ষের বহু বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তি গোবিন্দচরণ পার্কে সভা সমাবেশে বক্তব্য দিয়েছেন। তাঁদের মধ্যে স্বাধীন ভারতের প্রথম প্রধানমন্ত্রী পণ্ডিত জওহরলাল নেহরু, নেতাজি সুভাষচন্দ্র বসু, পাকিস্তানের প্রথম প্রধানমন্ত্রী লিয়াকত আলী খান ও পঞ্চম প্রধানমন্ত্রী হোসেন শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দী উল্লেখযোগ্য।
১৮৫৭ সালে সিপাহি বিদ্রোহের পর এখানে কয়েকজন স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামীকে প্রকাশ্যে ফাঁসি দেওয়া হয়েছিল। তাই পার্কের একদিকে সিপাহি বিদ্রোহের শহীদদের স্মৃতি স্মারক স্তম্ভও ছিল। ১৯৪৭ সালে সিলেটে অনুষ্ঠিত গণভোট এবং ১৯৫৪ সালে নির্বাচনের আগে এখানে সভা সমাবেশ হয়েছে। চট্টগ্রামের বিখ্যাত কবিয়াল রমেশ শীলও এ পার্কে কবিগান পরিবেশন করেছিলেন। ভাষা আন্দোলনের বিভিন্ন সভা-সমাবেশও এখানে হয়েছে।
ঐতিহাসিক পার্কটি গুঁড়িয়ে যে জেলা প্রশাসকের পৃষ্ঠপোষকতায় বিপণিবিতান প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল, তিনি ছিলেন পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানের বাসিন্দা। স্বাধীনতার এতকাল পরও পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানের বাসিন্দারের নামটি বহাল তবিয়তে আছে। কেবল আড়ালে চলে গেছে এ মাটির সূর্যসন্তান গোবিন্দচরণের নাম।
Girish Chandra Roy built a park in Bandarbazar of Sylhet in memory of his father and named it 'Govindacharan Park'.
In 1959, the historic park was demolished to make way for a shopping mall. The park was renamed Hasan Market after the then Deputy Commissioner Ali Hasan. Which is still there.
Many eminent persons of Undivided India have addressed the gathering at Govindacharan Park. Among them are Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of Pakistan and Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy, the fifth Prime Minister.
After the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, some freedom fighters were publicly hanged here. So on one side of the park there was also a memorial to the martyrs of the Sepoy Rebellion. Meetings were held here before the referendum held in Sylhet in 1947 and the elections in 1954. Famous poet of Chittagong Ramesh Shil also performed kavigan in this park. Various meetings and gatherings of the language movement have also taken place here.
Shopping mall was established under the patronage of the deputy commissioner who demolished the historic park and he was a resident of West Pakistan. Even after independence, the name of the resident of West Pakistan is still in use. Only the name of Govindacharan, the son of the sun of this soil, has gone into hiding.
